TITLE: Sr. Principal Engineer
DEPARTMENT: R&D STATUS: Exempt
PRIMARY FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Provide leadership and direction in research & development projects that could involve multiple interfaces internal and external to the company
* Perform highly complex engineering duties associated with the development of implant and instrument systems
* Interface with surgeons to develop user requirements and evaluate designs
* Provide input on group schedules, resources and budgets
* Provides technical solutions on both implant and instrument designs and drawings
* Develop, improve and implement the Design Control process
* Research, analyze and create intellectual property
* Optimize individual performance through effective integration with matrixed team environment
EXPERIENCE & SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
* Should have 12-15 years experience:
o 10 years designing and developing orthopedic (or similar) products with strong experience in instrumentation
o 5 years in spine
* Must have a working understanding of FDA QSR and ISO-13485 principles
* Should be a creative thinker and a good problem solver
* Should have significant medical device development experience and proven commercial success of launched products
* Ideal product types:
o Class I instruments and Class II; Class III implants desirable
o Orthopedic implants and instrumentation
o Spinal implants desirable
* Should be a self motivated individual that is able to work with minimal supervision
* Working knowledge of 3D CAD systems (SolidWorks preferred)
* Strong process knowledge including research and product development, manufacturing processes
* Strong leadership capabilities- able to get work done in a matrixed organization
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
* B.S. Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering and at least 12 years experience
* M.S. Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering and at least 10 years experience
* Ph. D. Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering and at least 8 years experience
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS: Other Engineering personnel, QA, Clin/Reg, Mktg, Mfg, Ops
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports to: VP of Research & Development
